The aim of basic research is to explore the unknown to find pioneering solutions. For example, the Austrian Nobel Prize winner Karl Landsteiner discovered the blood groups at the beginning of the 20th century. The findings of his research have saved the lives of millions of people so far.
However, great achievements are not the sole providence of biology and medicine. The results of the natural sciences and engineering create progress and prosperity. The knowledge generated by the humanities and social sciences helps us to better understand people, their history, and their future.
The alpha+ Foundation of the Austrian Science Fund (FWF) offers people and organisations looking to get involved philanthropically in basic research the opportunity to support outstanding researchers throughout Austria.
In 2020, the Austrian Science Fund FWF received donations for research from the following organizations: ASMET - The Austrian Society for Metallurgy and Materials, Dr. Gottfried and Dr. Vera Weiss-Wissenschaftsstiftung, Herzfelder'sche Familienstiftung, Internet Privatstiftung Austria (IPA), Red Bull GmbH.
